Protecting American Family Values Since 1989
Because Decency Matters
An ongoing record of matters requiring the public's attention.
Editor's Note
The following concerns are presented in order of severity as assessed by MOS researchers. Primary concerns represent active, ongoing threats to family values in American media. Secondary concerns are monitored on a continuing basis. All documentation is retained in our permanent record.
MOS Case File No. 001 · Under Observation Since 1991 · Status: Reactivated
We have been watching Crackodile & Friends since its original broadcast on public access television in 1991. We watched it then. We are watching it now. Our assessment has not changed.
The program presents itself as educational children's entertainment. It features a large, enthusiastic crocodile — referred to as "Wally" — who delivers life lessons to young viewers under the banner of a production company called MOS Productions. It has a fan club. It sells merchandise. It has a website. It is, by every surface measure, a children's show.
We urge you not to be fooled by surface measures.
Our researchers have spent considerable time reviewing materials associated with this program, both from its original run and its current revival. The character of Wally Crackodile did not arrive in this country without a past. He did not enter children's television without allies. And he did not build a fan club — called, we note, the "Crackids" — without a purpose.
We are not prepared at this time to enumerate every specific finding in this public forum. Some matters are better reserved for direct correspondence with concerned parents. What we will say is this: the name of this program is not accidental. The messaging embedded within it is not accidental. And the timing of its return is not accidental.
Documented Points of Concern
"We need not spell out specifics here. We suspect, on some level, you already know."
Secondary Concerns — Under Observation
A paid membership program targeting children, operating under the slogans "Safety, Loyalty, and Membership." We have no objection to safety. Our concerns center on the nature of the loyalty being cultivated and the identity of those soliciting it.
The production company behind Crackodile & Friends operates under the acronym "MOS." We find the appropriation of our initials troubling and are investigating whether this represents deliberate provocation or simple disregard for this organization's legacy.
The broader landscape of unregulated children's content on emerging digital platforms continues to warrant scrutiny. Crackodile & Friends is our primary concern, but it does not operate in a vacuum.
A coloring book bearing the Crackodile & Friends branding is currently in circulation. It is titled Winners Don't Lose Drugs. We have reviewed a copy. We encourage all parents to do the same before allowing this material into their homes.
This matter was considered closed following the cessation of original programming in 1993. We are reopening the file in light of current developments. All original documentation has been retained.
A Note to Parents
If you have received correspondence from the Crackids Fan Club, or if your child has expressed interest in materials associated with Crackodile & Friends, we encourage you to reach out to us directly. The Moral Outreach Society has been documenting this program longer than most of its current audience has been alive. We are happy to share what we know.
